Ingredients for writing a book

Getting started - Book writing

How to write a book

Firstly, having a personal interest in your subject matter really goes a long way towards establishing a good starting point for putting your thoughts into reality. The sticking point some times comes when there is so much that you could write but just don’t know how to piece them together on paper or on your pc.

Something that could put your mind at rest a little, is the knowledge that there are such a wide ranging variety of books available, written by ordinary everyday people, all of differing literary standards, all aimed at differing audiences. Their messages vary from fun, ridiculous, factual, fictional etc, some are very similar in their messages and content, but told in the authors unique way.

So what is a book? Well in simple terms a book is ‘You’, plain and good old fashioned ‘You’. Whether you are starting out on a new book project or are simply caught in a moment of writers block, there are a few simple tips that can help you get started.

  • Establish a plan of action to create an outline for your written work i.e. what do you envisage the start, middle and end of your written works will be.
  • Key note: Keep your plan loose and flexible in order to flow with change/edits etc
  • Who or what is/are the main character/sub characters/topics?
  • What are the issues/concerns/obstacles your character/s or topic are looking to overcome?
  • Where is/are the location/s?
  • What type of book will it be, information/thriller/comedy/drama etc?
  • Essentially every chapter, scene, paragraph should have a meaning relating to the theme/character/topic

Once you have established the key points above, you will be ready for the last all important ingredients;
