Are Performance Appraisals Doomed or set for renewal?
Establishing a practical consistent measurement of achievement and feedback would go some ways to establishing better trust in the appraisal systems. There is nothing worse than having a subjective rating system, it only causes confusion and upset i.e. individuals informed they are underperforming by one manager, but told they are meeting and exceeding by another manager. I don’t think appraisals are doomed but a single reliance on computerised assessments of individuals skills takes away the responsibility of informed decision making by human line managers to help develop their key resource, their people. Line managers must proactively engage in the development of individuals through positive feedback and provision of appropriate training/courses/job shadowing etc. Appraisals are a good system, they let us know how we are doing against what we are expected to do…it’s simple really, but sometimes we can miss the whole point with the use of computerised systems which sap the humanity out of an individuals progress.
