2nd OTB (Over the Board) Chess Comp – Any tips?

I’m entering my second Regional Qualifier next week and want some tips on preparation beforehand and during the competition. Matches will be 30mins on the clock, is there a strategy for how long you would take to move a piece i.e. 32 pieces in 30 mins, is it approximately 0.9 min per piece of thinking time or do you focus more on a strategic game play?

In my previous experience of OTB competition game play I definitely came away thinking that I had rushed all elements until the latter games where i seemed to settle down, but by then it was too late to exact any impact on my league position, but the experience was well worth it.

Without concentrating on ratings, this time i’ve practised OTB alongside Online live play (5min, 10 min matches mostly Online) to better understand the pressure of time in real time so to speak. During this process, I’ve achieved second place in one tournament, placed first in another tournament and taken many losses on this amazing journey but I must say i’ve found it quite enlightening and has improved my way of looking at the different stages of Chess manouvres.

Should i now be looking to reduce the amount of moves i make to achieve checkmate (obviously this will differ against each opponent) but in general is this the goal i must achieve? If so, back to my initial question, is there a general amount of time that you spend on making  moves especially within an OTB environment?

I can’t stop watching this video of Alexandra playing a blitz match, absolutely fantastic demonstration of chess mastery (it will be a while before i make my moves with such speed, but i’m definitely inspired to try :))
