A Rhino on the Tracks

Never having been on a major rollercoaster and to say I was slightly nervous about going on the Big One in Blackpool would be the understatement of the year. I was absolutely, unequivocally terrified beyond belief and could not understand why I was putting myself through such an ordeal and why I had not turned away from the gate that led me up to the innocent carriage that was to take me to my ultimate adrenaline filled adventure ride.

“You’ve got to follow your passion. You’ve got to figure out what it is you love–who you really are. And have the courage to do that. I believe that the only courage anybody ever needs is the courage to follow your own dream.”  –  Oprah Winfrey

I tried so very hard to believe these words of wisdom and foresight, but after what felt like the 71st check of my seating harnesses I still didn’t feel confident that I was secure and safe.

The carriage started to move forward. Too late to jump out now. Locked in and powerless, I was fated to complete the challenge, whether I liked it or not.

With my heart pumping like an angry blacksmith hammering on a newly formed horse shoe and my lips dried to a crisp, I held onto the safety bar for dear life as the carriage slowly takes me up and up, then up some more until it reaches the peak of its climb and the beginning of my nightmares.

For a moment, whilst at the top of ‘fears r us’, there was a calm tranquil atmosphere as I briefly peered through the corner of my eye and saw the beautiful sea up ahead. This feeling of euphoria lasted but a millisecond as the carriage plummeted to the depths of my most scary moments on this earth. The sheer drop sent my stomach into my mouth quicker than I could ever eat a vanilla cheese cake and all I could do was scream out in shock and terror and didn’t stop screaming until I reached the rides end.

“It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.” – Marcus Aurelius

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain
