When does assertiveness become aggressiveness?
I recently had my performance review and we discussed that I display strong signs of assertiveness throughout my work, but that I have to be careful that I might come across as aggressive to some people. The ethos of my department is to ‘Challenge to Improve and make work better’, whether this is through an unconscious assertive trait or not, I do this regularly and the dividends speak for themselves within my team. Is it that those who have never heard the words ‘can we try it another way’ somehow term this type of statement as aggressive behaviour or is it simply that anyone going against the grain of their thought processes is instantly deemed as a trouble maker and aggressive to their objectives. I’m not quite sure, but to the majority of my team and wider my ‘positive challenges’ are welcomed with open arms.
